Intermodal Transportation Building
Champaign, Illinois
This 50,000 square foot facility was designed to provide a consolidated terminal for inter-city bus service, rail passenger service, and major transfer point for local mass transit service. Initially conceived as a transfer point for its downtown Champaign, Illinois passengers, the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District expanded the program to meet the ground transportation requirements of several modes and users in an efficient, economic and sustainable manner. The building was also developed as a mixed-use facility to encourage pedestrian and economic activity in an area slated for renewal. Along with various office, retail, and other tenants within the facility, a meeting and banquet venue occupies the top floor and overlooks both cities. GHR designed the HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and electrical systems for this space. Years later, GHR also designed a complete LED lighting retrofit for the building.

The 40,000 square foot facility houses the Engineering Department’s offices and public meeting room; the Highway Department’s crew areas - including locker rooms and a break room; the Highway Department’s enclosed vehicle storage; and a vehicle maintenance area to serve the County’s fleet.
