Champaign County Court House
GHR performed MEP-FP engineering & construction administration in the expansion and renovation of the Champaign County Courthouse located in Urbana, Illinois. The design preserves the turn-of-the century courthouse as the prominent landmark within downtown Urbana. The project relocated the prisoner holding/staging areas, courtrooms and judicial support facilities to the 90,000 square foot addition while court support offices were located in existing but renovated 39,000 square foot courthouse.
Intermodal Transportation Building
This 50,000 square foot facility was designed to provide a consolidated terminal for inter-city bus service, rail passenger service, and major transfer point for local mass transit service. Initially conceived as a transfer point for its downtown Champaign, Illinois passengers, the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District expanded the program to meet the ground transportation requirements of several modes and users in an efficient, economic and sustainable manner. The building was also developed as a mixed-use facility to encourage pedestrian and economic activity in an area slated for renewal. Along with various office, retail, and other tenants within the facility, a meeting and banquet venue occupies the top floor and overlooks both cities. GHR designed the HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and electrical systems for this space. Years later, GHR also designed a complete LED lighting retrofit for the building.
Champaign County Fleet Maintenance Facility
The 40,000 square foot facility houses the Engineering Department’s offices and public meeting room; the Highway Department’s crew areas - including locker rooms and a break room; the Highway Department’s enclosed vehicle storage; and a vehicle maintenance area to serve the County’s fleet. As part of the design considerations, the County had a desire to encompass green concepts by integrating energy efficiency, durability, and light into the design of the facility. GHR helped achieve this desire by designing a geothermal heating and cooling system; heated floor system in the vehicle storage and maintenance bays; and taking natural light through many large windows into consideration.
MTD Bus Storage Addition
GHR provided the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection design components to convert and expand an existing bus storage building in Urbana, Illinois to meet the fleet storage and maintenance needs of the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District. This expansion doubled the bus storage capacity and provided offices and training facilities in an upstairs mezzanine. As with all MTD projects, sustainability and efficiency were a huge concern. GHR’s designs included a complete LED lighting design with robust controls; low flow plumbing fixtures; and a variable refrigerant flow heating & cooling system.
Urbana Park District Planning & Operations Center
GHR performed all MEP-FP design and construction administration on this 60,000 square feet facility. The overall intent of this project was to bring together four city departments: Planning & Operations, Aquatics, Maintenance and Grounds. The new facility included various office & meeting spaces, shower facilities, large vehicle maintenance bays, wash bays, construction shops and tool storage rooms. GHR’s project design included plumbing for all plumbing fixtures, wash bays and distributed compressed air; geothermal HVAC system; architectural lighting for finished spaces, high output fluorescent work lighting for work areas, and all supported power for equipment and convenience.
Savoy Public Works Building
The new one-story, 12,400 square foot facility provides space for three public works divisions including fleet maintenance, parks and grounds and streets and sewers. This project includes heated vehicle storage; a manual wash bay; staff support spaces. The design also incorporated drive-thru bays and a radiant floor heating system with epoxy finish to enhance building functionality. GHR designed the ventilation system; in-floor radiant heating system; all plumbing and plumbing fixtures; power distribution, general lighting and emergency power system.
Unit 4 School District Transportation Building
This $3.8 million project broke ground in September 2016 with the demolition of the former structures. Features of the new transportation facility will include offices, conference rooms, a training room and common areas for transportation, food service, and graphic services staff members. In addition, the facility will include a bus wash area and four maintenance bays to increase the department's ability to service the District's fleet. GHR provided complete mechanical, electrical, plumbing & fire protection services for this project.
Champaign County Courthouse Security System Upgrade
Project included upgrades to the Courthouses detention caliber door locking system, commercial door access control system, and video surveillance system. All IP cameras, IP camera wiring, intercoms, card readers and card reader wiring was replaced with new and integrated into a fully new, PLC-based detention caliber control and monitoring system. This effort required a thorough survey of the entire County Courthouse's existing door access control system as the existing system was antiquated and no system drawings were available.
Harry R. Hanley Building
GHR provided MEP-FP design and construction administration services for various improvements at the Hanley Administration Building. One part of this project includes upgrading IDOT’s antiquated auditorium into a modern-day conference center. GHR has been tasked with providing all required electrical infrastructure for the new AV systems; designing a flexible power system; developing an energy efficient and flexible lighting system to facilitate the space programming; re-designing the HVAC serving this space to eliminates noise and thermal comfort issues; and coming up with creative solutions to the current space’s plumbing issues. In addition, GHR is also designing a variable refrigerant flow heating and air conditioning system to replace the buildings defunct perimeter heating/cooling system. The lack of this existing system has caused the building’s VAV systems to work in overdrive and is causing premature failure of existing systems. Lastly, GHR is working with Baily Edward to upgrade the building’s 50 year old toilet facilities: this include all new fire alarm devices, lighting, plumbing to new plumbing fixtures and re-distribution of the existing ventilation and exhaust.
